Creation of an NGO of European lawyers to enhance legal accountability of social and environmental crimes
On Tuesday 5, 2012, Jean-Paul Teissonière, a lawyer representing the asbestos workers, presented in an interview to Novethic (website delivering CSR information) the creation of “Interforum”, an NGO of European lawyers who aim to fight against social and environmental crimes.
This announcement follows the verdicts of Eternit (asbestos, 2012) and Thyssen (accident at work,2011) trials in Italy which led to the condemnation of Board members and top senior managers to prison sentences (10 to 16 years) respectively on the grounds of “permanent sanitarian and environmental disaster” and of manslaughter and omission of safety after workers died in accidents. These trials highlighted the legal risks tied to employees’ safety and also identified certain Board directors and top senior managers as criminally responsible.
