Ownership Day – An event organized by UKSIF and sponsored by Vigeo
Today, March 25th, is UK Ownership Day, a UKSIF initiative to raise awareness of the financial benefits of active ownership and to encourage investors to value high quality active ownership strategies. Active ownership is about using shareholder rights to improve corporate value over the long-term.
It is in the interests of investors, companies and society because it encourages effective long-term wealth creation.
Asset owners are encouraged to engage with companies on issues that may have a negative impact on share value – including environmental, social and governance issues – or ask asset managers about the levels of active ownership that exist in their portfolios.
To support owners in this challenge, UKSIF have produced a short easy guide on how to be an active owner; which is launched this morning at a Breakfast Event on Ownership for pension funds, hosted by the NAPF (National Association of Pension Funds). The guide contains tips on questions to ask your managers, and examples of how to implement simple active ownership strategies. Vigeo are proud sponsors of this year’s guide, and have contributed insight on engagement practices Vigeo deploys on behalf of it’s investor clients. Vigeo offers owners the tools and advice necessary to demonstrate their ESG expectations to their managers. We work with owners to help them formulate their own approach to engagement, and have been providing active engagement solutions for over 10 years.
The 2014 Ownership Day will conclude with a Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons, to celebrate the intent of the initiative and to provide government perspective on stewardship, and provide the opportunity for investor peers to share experience and insight. Vigeo very much hope Ownership Day and the new Ownership Guide will encourage UK investors to explore and undertake a responsible approach to ownership.
